Mumbles Cafe
The idea for a cafe at Mumballup germinated from simultaneous convictions that:
- It was a great place to have a cafe,
- People were more likely to stop for food that had a reputation for good quality and good value,
- If people stopped for the food, it was a great environment to sample and buy skin care, ie Mumbiessence. They might also like the opportunity to take home some quality local craft or produce.
An initial plan for a cafe big enough to cater for busloads of tourists was scuppered by the 2008 financial crisis, but a more modest and perhaps more intimately appealing project was completed in April, 2010.
This project consists of a small cafe and shop built into an existing building on the property, about 100 metres off the road. There are only three inside tables and some space to display Mumbiessence with local craft and produce items. The entrance is through a larger alfresco dining area wrapped around an old concrete water tank and protected by shade sails; this area commands a pleasant view of the small lake with its gazebo (a local landmark).
Obviously the food has to be worth stopping for, we offer light meals that are of wide appeal, but try to make them tastier and better value than similar dishes on offer elsewhere. Patrons are welcome to bring their own alcohol; Mandalay Wines are just down the road, but there are any number of wineries within a 30 minute drive. Not everyone wants to stop for lunch, so tea and coffee, scones and cakes are on offer for the short stayers, along with a selection of cold drinks and packaged ice creams. Of course children are welcome and are catered for gastronomically.

Opening hours: Friday to Sunday and most Public Holidays, 10am to 5pm. There are only two of us - please call ahead if you intend to come as part of a group. |
Mumbles is available for small private gatherings outside public opening hours; we can seat up to 20 people inside. Please telephone 9732 2034 or call in to discuss your requirements.
The cafe is air-conditioned for your comfort and accessable for infirm or disabled patrons; there is also space to turn and park vehicles towing caravans or boats.
Although Mumbiessence soaps and skin care have been around for a few years and available through this web site, a web site does not offer potential buyers the luxury of testing the products on their own skin or savouring their beautiful fragrances (fragrance-free variants of many products are available for those with really sensitive skin). We know how good Mumbiessence is because it is all made here and we know what goes into it; our whole family uses it and our customers keep coming back for more. Try it out while your lunch is being prepared and ask yourself if you're not paying too much for whatever you're using now. You can take some home just for yourself, or select an attractive gift pack for someone else (but they need to be really special).
